ActionAid solidarity statement with the people of Iran

Iran is navigating a massive wave of nationwide protests, triggered by economic collapse and deepening social injustice. What began as demonstrations over economic hardships has evolved into a broader call for systemic and lasting political change.

However, people’s protests have been met with brutal repression - incarceration of common people, executions, and widespread violence. Thousands have reportedly been killed. Internet shutdowns and silencing tactics aim to erase voices, yet women remain at the forefront, leading with extraordinary courage, carrying the movement’s rallying cry: “Women, Life, Freedom” (Jin, Jiyan, Azadi).

We stand in unequivocal solidarity with the people of Iran — women, youth, workers, students, and all citizens — who are courageously raising their voices in pursuit of justice, dignity, economic security, accountability and fundamental human rights. We recognise the rights of the people of Iran to raise their voices against an authoritarian regime.

We condemn all forms of violence, repression, and intimidation against peaceful protesters. We affirm the right of Iranian citizens to assemble freely and peacefully, and demand protection of life, freedom of expression, and immediate release of those unjustly detained. We further call for the swift restoration of access to information for the people of Iran.

We acknowledge the rights of the Iranian people for self-determination, and we call on the international community and governments around the world to stand by the Iranian people and act responsibly: to amplify Iranian voices, demand accountability, and support their rights and freedom to build pathways toward justice and peace.

Our solidarity is rooted in the belief that a just, equal, and humane society is the right of every person, everywhere. We wish for peace to prevail, which is rooted in justice, care and a vision of shared humanity.
