ActionAid welcomes President von der Leyen’s address to the European Parliament, but stresses words will not end a genocide; only actions can.

ActionAid welcomes the announcements today from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and stresses that words without action cause deadly delays.
Javier Garcia, Head of Europe and Americas Region said: “President von der Leyen’s recognition that what is happening in Gaza must stop is welcome, but words alone will not end a genocide. Every day of inaction means more lives lost through famine, preventable disease and relentless bombardment. Europe cannot continue to merely issue statements while a genocide unfolds before the world’s eyes.
“The EU must act now without delay by suspending its bilateral support and halting all payments to Israel while ensuring civil society organisations remain unaffected. This announcement is welcomed but long overdue, therefore urgent action is needed. The same goes for the establishment of a Palestine Donor Group: without action, the humanitarian and reconstruction needs of Gaza cannot be addressed.
“Regarding targeted sanctions and the suspension of the EU–Israel Association Agreement, we have long passed the time of proposals. Delay and inaction only embolden perpetrators and prolong suffering, as Israel continues to act with impunity.
“These are not optional measures. They are essential to protect Palestinian lives and uphold international law. Delay and inaction only embolden perpetrators and prolong civilian suffering. Israel continues to act with impunity, and the time for empty statements has long passed. Anything less makes the EU complicit in this ongoing atrocity.”
ActionAid urges the European Commission and Member States to ensure these commitments are implemented without delay and accompanied by robust humanitarian access, accountability, and protection for civilians.
