PRESS STATEMENT

UPDATE THE NATION ON ASSET RECOVERY AND MANAGEMENT PLAN

The government should inform the nation on how much has been recovered from corruption acts and develop a comprehensive plan for management of recovered assets and properties.

Various security and investigative agencies confiscated properties proved to be proceeds of crime in the last few years. While the public has been made aware of assets/properties being recovered mostly through various media reports, there is need to provide a comprehensive update on the value of all recoveries.

To enhance transparency, it is important that the nation is informed on the recovery agenda. While appreciating that compiling information and developing a comprehensive plan for management of recovered stolen assets/properties and value could be involving, we are also sure that the government has significant and sufficient human resource at its disposal such as property valuators.

With a proper asset/properties recovery management plan, citizens will get value for money from the  recovery exercise and most importantly ensure that the recoveries benefit the people from where such assets/properties may have been stolen from in one way or the other. Recoveries need careful and accountable management.

The Anti-Corruption Policy provides a critical opportunity to strengthen the legal framework and eliminate the risks faced currently. In implementing, the establishment of a central repository alongside the development of guidelines, the management and disposal of assets will be critical and must be prioritized in line with the policy.

ActionAid will be monitoring the measures outlined in the Policy Implementation Plan (2024-2028) to ensure a transparent and prudent utilisation of public resources.
