The European Union’s Renewable Energy Directive contains a set of criteria designed to encourage the promotion of biofuels from sustainable sources.
To count towards renewable energy targets in the EU and its Member States, and to receive financial support, biofuels must comply with these criteria.
Current plans to produce biofuels from the jatropha feed-stocks grown at the Dakatcha woodland, Kenya, would result in a number of breaches of the sustainability criteria.
