Land Grabs & sustainable agriculture

Increased demand for biofuels in the EU is fuelling hunger and land grabs in the communities where we work.

European financial institutions like banks, hedge funds, pension funds provide financial support to land grabs because they are not adequately regulated.

EU support for models of agriculture that have low impact on climate, like agroecology, remains marginal. And within Europe, the Common Agriculture Policy is still overwhelmingly benefitting industrial (or: “high-input”) agriculture and large farms.

Through its LandFor campaign, ActionAid is working to change EU policies incentivizing land grabs and harming smallholder and women farmers’ rights, such as its support to the New Alliance for food security and nutrition.
